My Favorite Picture

17 May 2013

Day 17 of the challenge involves me showing you my favorite picture of myself. This is it. It was Summer time and I was seven years old. My dad took me to San Francisco on my first plane ride ever. I had an aunt and uncle and cousins living there at the time, so we went out for a visit and some sight-seeing.

I love this picture because it captures the essence of that trip for me. My first time travelling with just me and my dad (we've been on many trips together, just the two of us, since). San Francisco was a magical place to me (the Tanners lived there, for goodness sake), and I remember going to the Pier, riding a trolley, and spending a day at Great America with my dad and cousins. And then there was the iconic bridge, above. The sun was beaming and my dad had me sit for a photograph, squinting in the bright light. It is one of my favorite childhood memories, and that is why this is my favorite photo of myself.

Just for fun, I'm sharing a bonus pic. It is my favorite picture of myself that I hate. See below.

This godawful picture was taken in Venice by my very good friend, Adrienne. Of course, when she posted this on Facebook, I thought she was a terrible friend. I look like a crazy, fat Italian man in this picture. But I love the story behind it. We were exploring the Ducal palace while our friend Renee lay sick in bed at our rented apartment. We crossed the bridge of sighs (where we actually sighed, I'd like to note), and wandered the jail cells where prisoners like Cassanova were kept long ago. The cell pictured above was pitch dark, if memory serves me, and Adrienne said she was going to take a picture. So, naturally, I decided I would put on my "I'm so scared I think I pooped my pants" face. That right there is probably why I did not have a boyfriend. Anyway, Adrienne cracked up when she saw what she captured, and showed it to me. It was photographic gold, albeit gold I'd like to burn. But again, it was a good time, a good trip, and with one of the best friends I have ever had (more on her later, I promise).

What is your favorite photo of yourself? Does it capture a moment? A good hair day? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

  1. hahaha - I love both of your photos + stories. I think what makes a "favorite photo" isn't always how great you look in it, but rather the story behind it. what was happening. & the memories you have of the time. happy weekend! xo - chels @ LLinaBC.com

  2. Ha! I'm so happy you shared that pic!! Best part of that trip was getting a section of a Venetian restaurant to ourselves, the loud Americans :)

  4. Ohh that childhood picture is just so so darling. I nearly got rid of a bunch of awk pre-teen photos a few years ago when I was moving away to college and by some chance or luck I ended up holding on to them and tucking away. When we were doing all the cray storage unit moving last week I found them and now they are so treasured. The little snapshots that aren't necessarily "christmas card" ready are always my favorite. You're adorable in this!

    1. Thank you! We carry a lot of junk with us through life, but I think photographs are definitely worth preserving. I also think that photographic evidence of our awkward years keeps us real. It's great that you treasure yours now- I still can't handle looking at mine.

  6. So cute! I could not imagine how exciting it must've been for you to visit SF at such a young age... and right when Full House was popular! I live just an hour from SF now and I absolutely love it. Such a great (and fun!) city. :)

Adorable photo of you. Such a cute smile!

  7. Hahahahahaha. That second picture and the way you described it sums up like, every album on facebook pre 2010 for me! HAHAHA. Awesome.

And as for the San Francisco one... awww! I am originally from the Bay Area... born and raised! :) I'm starting to understand how great a place it really is. And was to grow up. I know so many people love it, but sometimes you have to go some place else and explore the world to really appreciate it!
