Rachel's Guide to Portland: Oso Market

19 March 2014

Hello! This week I'm back with another installment in my Guide to Portland. I'm always trying new places, and when I get good pictures of what I've eaten, I like to share with you. I'm all for supporting local businesses, and with Portland's vibrant dining scene, you really can't go wrong!

Last Tuesday evening, I tried out Oso Market's happy hour with my dad. The menu is varied and generous on the portions, as you will see in the pictures. The happy hour drink specials include $2 off wine pours, so my dad had a lovely red while I enjoyed the Oso Rojo, a mixed sparkling wine beverage. All I have to say about my drink, pictured above, is that I will return for that drink alone. It was perfect for sipping in the sun (which made a cameo appearance that particular day.

Our first stops on the food portion of the happy hour menu included mixed olives and the pickle plate, both pictured above. They bring plenty of olives, and while they're not the most spectacular olives I've had in town (I prefer when a place created their own mix with seasonings, and when the olives are warmed, which these were not), they still hit the spot (I love olives, what can I say?). As for the pickle plate, the servings were generous, and the variety was different from anywhere else I've tried, and that's saying something since Portland seems to love its pickles. Here we had pickled peppers (my fave), pickled radishes, pickled fennel, and kimchi. These ones all packed a punch, so if you're sensitive to heat, you might be better off without the pickles.

Also on the happy hour menu, we tried the radishes cooked with butter and salt. These were just okay to me, but definitely unlike any other radishes I've ever had. I actually found myself missing the usual radish bite, and would have been better off with raw radishes, French butter, and fleur de sel.

As much as I love my olives, I love my cheese even more, so whenever a restaurant has a cheese plate, I have to give it a try. Although there is a cheese plate on the happy hour menu, it is more of a meet and cheese plate, and since I'm a vegetarian, we ordered the cheese plate off the regular menu. I'm so glad we did. It's one of my favorite cheese plates. All 3 cheese were delicious, and sadly, I couldn't tell you what they were (though I do know the middle one is a wine-soaked goat cheese). The cheese came with a fruit spread (fig?) and grain mustard (this is what won me over- I am a mustard fanatic), and some more pickles, this time bread & butter. The plate was also served with some sliced baguette, the better to enjoy the cheese and spreads with.

My dad was still hungry, so while I saved room for dessert, he ordered the chickpea sandwich off the happy hour menu. What you see above is only half of the sandwich, making this the biggest bargain on the happy hour menu. The sandwich is made with curried chickpea spread, kale, provolone, and green apples. It was nothing short of delicious, and I felt like a kid in a candy store when my dad told me I could take the leftovers home with me.

And now the dessert portion, because I cannot go anywhere and not order dessert. I tried the panna cotta with wine sauce, and it was the perfect ending for my meal. The wine sauce tasted like a rich cherry lollipop, and the panna cotta tasted fresh and creamy. The perfect sunny day dessert- and cute to boot.

Finally, since Oso is a market as well as a place to eat, one wall is lined with displays of candy, condiments, cheeses, tea, beers, liquors, and wine. Its a lot of fun just to browse around (I wanted all of the chocolate, but it's a bit on the spendy side), and my dad came away with two boxes of my mom's favorite tea- Smith Tea's Lord Bergamot, which is a delicious Earl Grey tea.

My verdict: I can't wait to go back. I'd love to enjoy my drink and that sandwich again, and poke around the shop a bit more.

Rachel's Guide to Portland: Imperial

06 February 2014

I don't know about you, but I love me a good happy hour. What I look for in a happy hour beyond good food and good drinks are good value, a varied food menu (must have a corn-free vegetarian option), and good hours. Imperial gets points for all three.

I came in for Imperial's happy hour on a Wednesday after work. At 5pm, the bar was almost empty, so I had my choice of seats (I chose a table since I was meeting my mom). I ordered one of their two specialty cocktails, the Vieux Carre. It's a whiskey-based cocktail with a lot going on, but it is oh so delicious and refreshing in the middle of the work week. My mom ordered the top-pictured cocktail, a Black Diamond, which is the other featured happy hour cocktail. Hers had creme de menthe and chocolate bitters, and was very complex- a variety of flavors dance on your tongue as you sip.

I ordered us each a parker house roll. These are pillowy clouds of deliciousness, and possibly my favorite rolls in town. By the time we finished these, the bar was filling up with the after-work crowd.

Confession: I"m a bit of a french fry addict. I will judge a restaurant on based on their fries. I will also not stop eating fries until my stomach balloons out. So far, my favorites in town have been St. Jack and Little Big Burger (thank God for truffle fries). These fries take the cake. They are perfectly golden and crispy on the outside, and soft and fluffy on the inside. They came out piping hot and were served with a delicious special sauce. I have no idea what the special sauce is made of, but I approve.

Note: my mom and I did order the cheese plate, but I was such a little piggie that I completely forgot to take pictures. I probably love cheese as much as I love fries. Maybe a little more, given the lack of picture. But, I will say that my mom and I both enjoyed a bleu cheese for the very first time. Neither of us like bleu cheese, but I figured I give this one a shot since it was not very veiny, and I'm glad I did. Both of the other cheese were delicious, as was the little fruit and nut bar the cheese was served with.

Finally, dessert. I also judge a restaurant based on their desserts, and Imperial gets an A+ from me. I want to hug their pastry chef. This coconut honey cake was such a delight. I have never had a coconut cake so moist and so flavorful. This picture makes it look small, but it was actually big enough that my mom and I could not finish it, so my mom had leftovers to take home. Not only this, but it was actually a little difficult to choose a dessert because the menu looked so good. That, folks, is how it's done.

I highly recommend Imperial to anyone who finds themselves downtown and in need of a happy hour. Sure, you have to pay for street parking, and all the nearby meters are only 90 minutes (which isn't quite enough), but it's worth it.

Rachel's Guide to Portland: Bamboo Sushi

21 July 2013
How many of you like sushi? I absolutely love it, but I can be a bit picky about it. Here in Portland, we have access to great, fresh seafood, so when it comes to sushi, I want to know that the seafood comes from the best sources.

Enter: Bamboo Sushi. I have only ever visited the NW location, so I can't vouch for the SE location. The NW outpost is rather trendy, but don't let that fool you- it deserves its reputation. It also happens to have an incredible happy hour menu where you can pig out on wine and sushi for an absolute steal!

So, let's get to it. When I arrived Wednesday night, my mom was already seated in the bar and had ordered a very vibrant salad. It was perfect for a hot Summer day- light and bright. I ordered a very nice glass of red for $4, which is a really sweet deal in this town.

After salad, my mom and I ordered the nigiri flight, which included shrimp, albacore, salmon, and tuna. I let my mom have the lighter two while I took the darker fish. I love tuna, and this was some really good stuff. The salmon was great too- none of that fishy taste, which is an indication of less than fresh fish. Both fish simply melted in my mouth. Pure deliciousness.

Next, we had the NW Philly roll, which is a salmon, cream cheese, and cucumber roll fried in tempura batter. Say what now?! Yes. OMG, it it so stinking good. I've ordered it every time I've gone to Bamboo because it is so delectable.

My mom and I ended with the California roll, because we wanted to save room for dessert at Salt & Straw next door. I still ended up rolling out of Bamboo a little more full than I should have, given that I was going to top it all off with ice cream. But the California roll was worth it.

Despite leaving the restaurant feeling full, our tab came out to somewhere around $25, which I think is excellent for happy hour for two! Considering the high quality of the food and wine, it is an absolute steal. If you haven't been, I suggest you go soon, and if you do, would you please bring me along? Thanks.

Rachel's Guide to Portland: Irving St. Kitchen

01 July 2013
Have you ever decided to go to a restaurant based solely on the desserts they offered? If so, then you're the kind of person I would love to go out to eat with. Dessert was a major factor, besides location, in choosing Irving St. Kitchen for last week's dinner with mom.

Irving St. Kitchen french fries

Irving St. Kitchen is a Southern food restaurant with a Northwest flair. They serve fancier (i.e. more expensive) versions of Southern comfort food classics, like fried chicken or ham and biscuits. Their happy hour, however, is very reasonably priced, and I was quite surprised that the place wasn't busier given its location in the Pearl District.

slow gin

The drink menu is fairly extensive: they serve very nice, suitably-priced wines for happy hour, they have a creative cocktail menu, and they even have wines on tap! I opted for the red wine (I was in need of some calming), and my mom surprised me by ordering a cocktail: the Black Thorne, which was made with plymouth gin, plymouth sloe gin, carpano antica, and orange bitters. My wine was very nice and smooth, and mom's cocktail was the bomb- floral, lightly sweet, and very fragrant with an orange twist!

Irving St. Kitchen

For food, I was in a salad and french fries mood (it happens), so I ordered the Green Goddess Caesar which was made with fresh, crisp romaine leaves and croutons that melted in the mouth. My mom and I split the fries from the happy hour menu, which were served with a garlic aioli (warning: this aoili made me not enjoy my own company afterward, if you catch my drift; if you want to impress anyone afterward, I recommend skipping the aioli, despite how yummy it is). My mom ordered the ham and biscuits, which came with a red pepper jelly. I sampled a little bit of biscuit with the red pepper jelly and oh my! It was a nice, tender biscuit and the red pepper jelly was such a surprise- sweet, but not overly so.

Finally, it was time for dessert. It was somewhat tough to narrow it down to two desserts for us to share, but we decided on the butterscotch pudding and the banana and chocolate marjolaine. I was kind of expecting to have to horde my dessert, given how it seems that the pricier the restaurant, the smaller the dessert. Not so here. In fact, there was so much dessert, my mom and I each had leftovers. Leftover dessert?! Say what?!

Irving St. Kitchen dessert

Seriously, both were incredibly delicious. The black bottom butterscotch pudding was sweet, buttery, and there was a layer of chocolate at the bottom (be still my heart). As for my marjolaine, oh man, it was delicious. Layers of chocolate, banana cake, vanilla frosting, and bruleed bananas on the side. You should know that I really love bananas and chocolate together. So basically, I was in heaven. Twice. Because I had leftovers.

I highly recommend this place, especially for happy hour. You get a lot of bang for your buck, and then you can top it off with a bomb dessert. So, to drown your sorrows after realizing you can't afford anything in the shops in the Pearl, get yourself a bite and a drink at Irving St. Kitchen.
